The STAR model mainly used for answering behavioral question although can be used to create answers for technical questions! Before jumping to STAR model, if you like to find general idea about interview preparation checklist click here!
The STAR
model is a useful framework for preparing answers to behavioral questions in
an interview. It’s a way of providing clear examples or evidence of your
skills, knowledge and approach to work. For each question, use the following
elements to structure your answers:
SITUATION – Describe the context, details and time-frame
TASK – What was the problem or challenge you were faced with?
ACTION – What was the action you took? Provide detail
RESULT – This is about the outcome – what did you accomplish and what did you learn? Promote yourself and your achievements.
Star Model Interview Question Example:
“Can you give me an example of a time when you were able to solve a problem using your planning and organisational skills?”
Answer:
“In my part time job as an events assistant I am required to plan and organise event bookings, including scheduling staff and equipment. Recently, I had a challenge where two staff reported in sick on the day of the big event. Fortunately, I had developed a back-up plan for unexpected situations and I was able to call on un-rostered staff to come into work. As a result, the event was able to proceed without disruption and my supervisor was very positive about my efficient response to the problem”.
Hopefully this helps to prepare for your mock interviews, however remember as they are mock interviews the interviewer is more than happy to provide you with any feedback and suggestions for improvement for next time! So no pressure to have a perfect interview – this is a great chance for you to practice your skills and examples.
